First-time setup
Create your first wallet (Standard)
This is the STANDARD path, the one most owners take. The ERA generates the keys by itself from two built-in random sources (the chip's hardware generator and sensor noise); you set a PIN for the ERA Recovery Card, hold the card to the device and pick a name. Advanced users who want to add their own randomness, choose 12 words or split the backup into Shamir shares take the EXPERT path instead: Create a wallet in Expert mode.
Steps
Part 1: Generate the keys
On LET'S START, tap CREATE.

ERA: Let's start. On SETUP MODE, tap STANDARD.

ERA: Setup mode. Read the four short intro screens, tapping NEXT on each.

ERA: Intro, screens 1 to 4.
Note: Behind the scenes, the ERA has built the keys from two independent true random number generators: one in the main chip and one in the secure element. Their outputs are mixed together, so no single component decides your keys, and nothing about them ever leaves the device. Expert mode adds three more sources that you provide yourself.
On SUCCESS ("Your private keys have been generated automatically"), tap NEXT.

ERA: Keys generated.
Part 2: Back up to the ERA Recovery Card
Why the ERA Recovery Card
Nothing to write down: the backup goes onto the card's secure chip, encrypted and locked with a PIN you choose. Anyone who finds the card cannot read it.
Restoring is a tap, not 24 typed words: hold the card to the device and enter the card PIN.

See Choose a backup method for the full list.
On ERA BACKUP, tap START.

ERA: ERA backup. Read the five short screens about the backup, tapping NEXT on each. The last one asks you to prepare the cards from the box.

ERA: Backup intro, screens 1 to 5. On SET PIN, tap SET PIN.

ERA: Set PIN.
Note: The card PIN is separate from the device PIN. You need it to restore from the card; 16 wrong entries block the card for good. Source: Help Center
On CREATE PINCODE, enter a card PIN of 4 to 8 digits, then tap OK.

ERA: Create pincode. On REPEAT PINCODE, enter the same digits and tap OK.

ERA: Repeat pincode. Hold the card flat against the upper back of the device until the bar fills. The header reads READ CARD, then SAVE THE BACKUP.

ERA: Save the backup. On BACKUP SAVED!, tap NEXT. To write a copy to a second card from the box, tap ONE MORE first.

ERA: Backup saved. On PAPER BACKUP, tap SKIP. The card is your backup; the words on paper are an optional extra.

ERA: Paper backup offer.
Want the words on paper as well?
Tap START instead of SKIP. The screens are the ones in the block "No ERA Recovery Card at hand? Back up on paper", from "Prepare the sheet" to the word check; afterwards the device opens CREATE NAME and you continue with Part 3.
No ERA Recovery Card at hand? Back up on paper
Take the Paper Recovery sheet and a pen. After NO CARD the paper backup is required and the card is not offered again during setup; you can write a card later from the wallet's settings — see Back up to an ERA Recovery Card.
Write down the seed phrase
On ERA BACKUP, tap NO CARD.

ERA: ERA backup. On the "Now, prepare Paper Recovery sheet" screen, take the sheet and a pen, then tap NEXT.

ERA: Prepare the sheet.
Warning: Anyone who reads these 24 words can spend your funds. Write them on the sheet with a pen; do not photograph or type them.
On ATTENTION!, tap START.

ERA: Attention. Write words 1 to 8 on the sheet, numbered exactly as shown. Then swipe up to see the next eight.

ERA: 24 words, 1 to 8. Repeat for words 9 to 16 and 17 to 24. NEXT becomes active on the last screen.

ERA: 24 words, 17 to 24. Check every word against the screen once more, then tap NEXT.
Confirm the seed phrase
On CONFIRM SEED PHRASE, tap NEXT.

ERA: Confirm seed phrase. On the word list, swipe up to the end and tap CONFIRM. Three words are hidden; the check asks for them next.

ERA: Confirm seed phrase, word list. On STEP 1 OF 3, read the number and tap the word that sits at that number on your sheet.

ERA: Word check. Repeat for STEP 2 OF 3 and STEP 3 OF 3. After the third correct word the device opens CREATE NAME; continue with Part 3.
Part 3: Name and icon
On CREATE NAME, tap CREATE.

ERA: Create name. Replace the suggested name with your own, then tap OK.

ERA: Change name. On NAME ASSIGNED:, tap OK.

ERA: Name assigned. On CHOOSE ICON, tap an icon, then CONFIRM.

ERA: Choose icon. On CHANGE ICON, tap DONE.

ERA: Change icon.
Part 4: Link the ERA Wallet app
On LINK YOUR WALLET, tap LINK NOW.

ERA: Link your wallet. On the wallet list, tap ERA Wallet (the first row).

ERA: Wallet app list. On app.era-wallet.com, tap NEXT. If the app is not on your phone yet, scan this QR code with the phone first.

ERA: Download ERA Wallet. Swipe up to the last page of CONNECT ERA Wallet.

ERA: Connect ERA Wallet. Tap SHOW QR. QR FOR LINK appears and animates; leave it on screen.

ERA: QR for link. On the phone, open the ERA Wallet app. On Connect your ERA Wallet, tap Link Wallet.
9:41
Phone: Connect your ERA Wallet. Point the phone camera at the ERA screen and hold still until the app finishes reading the code.
9:41
Phone: The app's Scan QR page; point the camera at the QR FOR LINK screen on the ERA. On the ERA, tap DONE.
On YOUR WALLET IS READY!, tap FINISH.

ERA: Wallet ready.
To link another software wallet (Sparrow, MetaMask, Rabby, Keplr…), see Linking overview.
Link later
On LINK YOUR WALLET, tap SKIP, then FINISH. You can link at any time from the wallet's settings — see Link the ERA Wallet app, which also covers an app that already holds a wallet.
Done
The ERA shows the Main menu with SCAN QR, WALLETS, RECOVERY MANAGER, SETTINGS and 2FA. Your wallet is created, its backup is on the ERA Recovery Card, and the ERA Wallet app lists the wallet. Keep the card away from the device and separate from the card PIN.

Trouble?
CARD NOT EMPTY → the card already holds a backup. Tap BACK and use another card from the box, or OVERWRITE and enter that card's old PIN.
ERROR with Your ERA Card was not detected. Please, try again! → move the card over the upper back of the device and tap TRY AGAIN.
Incorrect word during the paper check → the device asks for another number; you have 5 mistakes in total. After YOU MADE 5 MISTAKES, tap START OVER and copy the words again.
NEXT or CONFIRM stays grey on a word screen → swipe up to the end of the list.
You pressed the hardware button by accident → the device asks "Exit Wallet Setup? All progress will be lost if you exit now." Tap CANCEL and continue where you were.
